Bringing Money Management to Life
Pfeg, the UK’s leading finance education organisation, explains how their ‘My Money’ programme can help schools plan and teach financial capability. The challenges facing schools have become increasingly complex and demanding in recent years. Helping pupils achieve economic wellbeing as part of the Every Child Matters agenda is a key part of attaining a good Ofsted report, and an area where many schools need some degree of support.
In an increasingly complicated financial environment, young people need to be equipped with financial capability skills for their future and pfeg are able to help schools and pupils achieve this goal. ‘My Money’ is a financial education initiative funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and led by pfeg and its partners, EdComs, the PSHE Association and NCB. Developed in response to the growing need to prepare children for their financial future, it aims to bring money management to life in your school.
My Money Week 2010 – 28th June to 4th July
Taking place last summer term, My Money Week 2009 was a tremendous success with thousands of primary and secondary schools across England taking part in teaching children and young people about money in fun and engaging ways. Over 2,400 requests were made for the My Money Week secondary resource packs and over 5,600 requests for the My Money Week primary resource packs.
Schools engaged in My Money Week in a wide variety of ways from teaching one lesson on financial management to engaging in whole-school cross-curricular activities such as strawberry fayres, discos, fetes, schools banks, workshops to prepare students for independent living, Dragon’s Den style activities and stock market simulations to name but a few.
One primary school teacher from Gateshead commented: ‘The lessons learned from My Money Week have made a real difference to the lives and expectations of the children who took part from our school’
