Responsible Travel and Tourism
Adventure travel company Explore explains that global travel can be both sustainable and responsible and outlines the details of its School Adventure Programme. For twenty-eight years Explore adventures have been more than ‘just another holiday’. As well as offering incredible experiences in destinations around the world, Explore has always had a programme of responsible tourism initiatives in place, ensuring that they tread lightly wherever they go.
In fact, the company was created with this in mind, long before sustainability became a fashionable concept.
Less is More
Travelling in small groups has always been a priority for Explore, and a maximum of around sixteen people ensures that even the smallest African village can host a group without being swamped. But further than that, Explore has a total faith in Responsible Tourism and a belief that:
- People who work for Explore should be treated fairly and paid a fair wage
- We should respect the customs and culture of the country we are visiting so that we do not offend local people
- We should try to ensure that local people benefit economically from tourism by employing them as leaders and guides, eating out in local restaurants and using family-run hotels
- We must minimise our impact on the environment by travelling in small groups, reducing waste and offsetting our carbon emissions
Support
As well as operating responsibly, Explore supports a variety of charitable projects including schools and tigers in India, homes for orphans in Egypt and Tanzania, secondary school places in Morocco and a baby elephant in Sri Lanka.
Carbon Offsetting
For some time Explore has offset the carbon emissions of all their staff flights and encouraged customers to follow suit. Now though, the company has taken the next step, carbon offsetting all its passengers’ flights by investing in projects that reduce global CO2 emissions– the first large travel operator to do so.
Explore has been recognised for their proactive initiatives by AITO and enjoy 5-star Responsible Tourism Status. They have also won several awards including the Green Business Awards 2008 (Best Travel or Tourism Business) and Best Tour Operator in the Virgin Holidays Responsible Travel Awards 2008.
Choice
As an adventurous travel operator Explore offers a large range of holidays to more than 130 countries, near and far. So whether your interest is trekking, cycling, experiencing new places or meeting new people, they are sure to be able to assist.
Many teaching staff choose to travel with Explore, and whether they are travelling as a school or on their own personal holiday, the small group concept offers them the ideal way to travel.
School Adventures
Explore’s School Adventures programme offers both pupils and teachers a unique experience that will get them closer to the country they visit and provide a longer lasting learning experience.
Explore can create totally bespoke tours based around a specific part of the curriculum - geography, history or citizenship for instance - or they can mould a great trip around one of their existing itineraries – it’s up to you!
